WEDDING INVITATION WORDING
Wedding invitation wording can feel a little daunting at first, but it’s much simpler than it seems.
At its heart, your invitation just needs to tell guests who is getting married, where the wedding is taking place, when it’s happening, and what time to arrive.
The wording style you choose will usually reflect the overall feel of your wedding — whether that’s formal and traditional or relaxed and informal. Just like your invitation design, your wording helps set the tone for your celebration.
To help make things easier, we’ve put together a selection of wording examples below. Some are more traditional, while others are perfect for modern and relaxed weddings.
Please note that the examples below refer to the couple as ‘Bride’ and ‘Groom’, but we proudly celebrate all love stories and are happy to adapt wording to suit every couple and every celebration
Every wedding invitation typically includes the following elements:
1. The Host
Traditionally, the host was the person or family contributing towards the wedding costs. These days, invitation etiquette is much more relaxed, so including a host line is completely optional.
2. The Invitation Line
This is the wording that officially invites your guests to the wedding. The style of this line often helps set the tone of the celebration — whether formal, modern, or relaxed.
3. The Couple
The names of the couple getting married. Traditionally, the bride’s name appeared first, but modern wedding invitations can be styled in whatever way feels right for you.
4 & 5. The Details
This section includes all the important information such as the venue, date, and ceremony time, along with reception details if applicable.
A Few Helpful Notes
Keeping things simple is often best — less really can be more.
Wedding invitations traditionally avoid punctuation at the end of lines.
Postcodes are usually left off the main invitation and included on an information card instead.
Gift list details are best shared separately rather than printed on the invitation itself.
